Important General, Scientific and Evolutionary Terms
Important Terms and Definitions that will be Used Throughout This Study..There will be more added, so make sure you keep coming back for updates.
1. Genome – The total or complete genetic structure of a species or gene pool.
2. Mutation – A mistake in the copying of the DNA...Brought About or Created by radiation or chemicals.
3. Recombination – Mixing of Genes in sexual or asexual reproduction
4. Gene – Sequence of amino acids in the double helix of DNA...Most commonly known as "The Stuff of Life"
Genetics-The study of heredity, or how the characteristics of living things are transmitted from one generation to the next
5. Allele – Variants of genes in the Genome that are for the same structure but express a difference in characteristics.. brown eyes vs. blue eyes.
6. Taxon – Category in classification such as species, phylum....(Rank)
7. Phylogeny – The Assumed evolutionary history or family tree of a species or other group.
8. Micro- Forming element meaning "small, microscopic; magnifying; one millionth
9. Macro-Forming element meaning "long, abnormally large, on a large scale
10. DNA- Deoxyribonucleic acid, a self-replicating material present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information.
11. Chromosomes-A threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes.
